Third and fourth grade students portage around Spokane Falls in the manner of the Corps of Discovery, a re-enactment of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. In their study of the expedition, students were amazed with the accounts of the portage around the Great Falls on the Missouri River. Our students were challenged to portage donations to the Second Harvest Food Bank from the base of Spokane Falls through Riverfront Park, along the Centennial Trail to Trent Avenue and then to the Food Bank. The trip took 15 students and 3 adult helpers one hour to pull and push 300 lbs of food. The Discovery School "Corps of Discovery" demonstrated teamwork, persistence, cooperation and stamina. They also had a very good time.
