The Lifetime Celebration of Learning Begins Here!

Discovery School, is a privately funded, nonprofit elementary school. We are an accredited, independent, non-sectarian school for pre-school through sixth grade. We are approved by the Superintendent of Public Instruction and enjoy membership and accreditation through the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools (PNAIS). This fall will be the start of our 22nd year in educating young children.

Discovery School is located near downtown Spokane, close to many cultural sites in the city. Students in pre-school through sixth grade learn a rich variety of academic skills with an experienced, state-certified teaching staff. Classroom size averages 18 or less for kindergarten through sixth, 15 to 1 for Pre-kindergarten and 7 to 1 for Preschool.

As we join the heads, hearts and hands of our parents, teachers and students, we will graduate emotionally mature, intellectually capable, inquisitive, socially aware and self-motivated students who are fulfilling their potential.

Discovery School's educational approach is comprised of four distinct components:

  1. The curriculum is process-oriented. Discovery School's philosophy is that process skills allow children to learn at their own rate as they transfer skills from subject to subject.
  2. Problem solving is used to develop sharp minds. As students become flexible and fluent in their thinking patterns, they learn that learning is fun and rewarding.
  3. Learning success enhances a positive self-concept and leads to an inquisitive, probing mind. Discovery School's goal is to allow each student to find his or her learning strengths so that successes can be maximized.
  4. Students learn the importance of taking responsibility for their own actions in the same manner with which they learn to read and write. Clear academic and behavioral expectations are communicated to each student.

The curriculum at Discovery School includes language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health, foreign language, creative arts, music, information and technology skills and physical education. In addition, students enjoy the pleasure and personal satisfaction of enrichment activities. Numerous field trips enhance the learning opportunities, bringing topics to life. Children of all ages participate in community service projects.
